2011 Art Show Season Begins

by Gene Brack on 05/18/11

The Spring Beaux Arts Show in Davenport, Iowa was one of the best in several ways.  The weather, though forecast as rainy, turned out sunny.  After a very lengthy and wet Spring, people were out to view the sunshine as well as the art and craft exhibits.  They not only walked their dogs but even a miniature horse parked outside my tent and charmed the crowd.

My favorite moment occurred late Sunday afternoon.  A young couple checked out my work and cruised through my tent several times.  The last time, they huddled outside my tent with their calculator and were in serious negotiations when I interrupted them, "Can I help you?"  Their goal was a new piece I had painted this Spring entitled "Rough Edges." The two canvas composition was executed in oil with heavily textured squares interlocking.  The rustic result was bark-like and had receive much attention throughout the weekend.

My weakness shows up when a young couple set their sights on a piece of art but lack the funds to purchase it.  My willingness to discount my asking price, they dismissed in no uncertain terms!  They insisted on paying full price.   Finally they cleared their financial hurdle and paid a large sum in cash and charged the balance.  They couldn't wait to hang it in their loft and had pictured it in a special spot all afternoon.

For me painting is about two things: The thrill of painting original works that I enjoy and secondly, the thrill of selling to enthusiastic young patrons.   They made my day and hopefully my painting made their loft!
